Dr. Wong Kam Fu plays a significant role in the protection of intellectual property (IP) rights in People’s Republic of China. In early 1980s, he foresaw the importance of protecting IP rights to achieve China’s modernization goals and strived for the establishment of Patent Law in China. In 1982, Dr. Wong signed an agreement with Ren Jianxin, the Vice President of the China Council for Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT) and President of the Supreme People’s Court of China (1988-1998), to establish a joint patent agency in Hong Kong, which became the China Patent Agency (H.K.) Ltd. today, where Dr. Wong currently works as Vice Chairman.
Approved by the State Council of People’s Republic of China, China Patent Agency (H.K.) Ltd. (“CPA”) was incorporated in March 1984 as a Hong Kong-based Chinese intellectual property (IP) agency, of which the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade is the holding partner. As one of the three pioneer Chinese IP agencies, CPA provides comprehensive services to protect IP rights for clients in China and abroad, which includes application prosecution, litigation, mediation, licensing, assignment, and counseling in relation to patents, trademarks, copyrights, domain names, unfair competition and other IP-related fields. CPA also prosecutes applications for registration of patents, trademarks and designs in Hong Kong.
Currently, CPA employs over 500 staff, including 190 patent attorneys, 40 trademark attorneys, and 53 attorneys-at-law. Its powerful team of professionals is known for their extensive practicing experience and solid academic and technical background, allowing the firm to become one of the largest and most reputable IP agencies in China. Based in Hong Kong, CPA has also established branch offices in Beijing, Shenzhen, Shanghai, New York, Tokyo, and Munich to extend its quality services to these areas.
Guided by the highest standards of professionalism and integrity to protect clients’ IP rights, CPA has been rated as a top tier patent and trademark prosecution firm in China in the global surveys by Managing Intellectual Property (MIP). The firm was also honored as one of the best IP law firms in China by Asia Law, and one of the world’s top 250 in Intellectual Asset Management’s ranking of global leaders in patent practices.
